Suicide Prevention Subject Matter Expert

Position Description/Responsibilities Include: Provide subject matter expertise for the Defense Health Agency; Defense Centers of Excellence (DCoE) for Psychological Health (PH) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Professional with 4+ years of experience in suicide prevention or research. Preference for someone with experience in or with the military and/or a research and/or policy background. A good candidate would be highly versatile, adaptable, and familiar with working in complex systems. This staff member will assist with strategic work, and the writing of knowledge products (in support of “taskers,” congressional testimony, etc…), integrative efforts (within the Deployment Health Clinical Center (DHCC) and across organizations), and will lead special projects as appropriate.

Specific duties include:

  • Function as one of the primary DoD subject matter expert on suicide prevention.
  • Provide rigorous and time sensitive reviews of project proposals, research studies and findings, policy based on a strong understanding of science and practice of clinical and community suicide prevention including the epidemiology of suicide and specialized research methods.
  • Ability to summarize primary evidence/gaps and methodological challenges for range of suicide prevention topic areas (e.g., epidemiology, biopsychosocial risk and protective factors, clinical and non-clinical interventions).
  • Create clear, well-organized and detailed scientific reports as well as written products tailored to a range of non-scientific audiences.
  • Co-author articles for high-impact peer reviewed journal.
  • Develop and provide briefings translating scientific knowledge adapted to specific clinical and non-clinical audiences.
  • Provide science-based consultation to organizations about suicide prevention strategies to include programs, practices and policies.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate and/or disseminate suicide prevention programs.
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Experience

  • 10 years of experience in the implementation of community psychology interventions
  • Familiarity with prevention literature and prevention models
  • Published research in the area of prevention and early intervention
  • Experience with evidence grading and synthesis, or meta-analysis
  • Military or Veteran experience relating to PH/TBI issues

Qualifications for this position include:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to communicate directly with peers, managers, and clients while leading product development to a completed and successful solution.
  • Strong organization skills to manage multiple timelines and complete tasks quickly within the constraints of clients’ timelines and budgets.
  • Experience within the DoD and Government agencies supporting senior military or other federal Leaders.

Clearance Required: Position of Public Trust Education: Doctoral degree in psychology or related field
